Oberlin was a major chapter of my life. As such, I am excited to support my alma mater, of which I continue to be deeply proud.
However, until the institution publicly commits to a policy of permanent fossil fuel divestment, I will be withholding all donations to Oberlin College and encouraging my fellow alumni to do the same. I lament that an announcement of permanent divestment was not a no-brainer for the Board of Trustees.
But as always, I retain my hope. I look forward to the day when I can shout from the trees that Oberlin is once again living up to its reputation as a global leader in the intersectional movement for social, racial, and environmental justice. I hope that day comes in 2016, and when it does I will be proud to stand with the Board of Trustees and resume my alumni contributions.

Oberlin needs to be on the right side of history on this issue as it has been on so many others. Fiscal responsibility requires divesting from future risk and investing the clean energy future.

This is a reasonable approach for Oberlin to take and to make our desires to known to those companies who most need to redirect the proportion of their fuel location investments.

This is a really important issue, and one on which Oberlin can take a stand. Let’s do this.
